Enjoy Encourage Rape, India Officials Criticized |
Indian police officials apologized after asking a controversial statement related to rape. On Wednesday (13/11), head of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Ranjit Sinha, said, "If you can not prevent rape, then you should enjoy it." Comment was responded to with anger by thousands of women of the country.
In India, the CBI is the country's main investigative agency, the equivalent of the FBI in the United States.
Sinha made his statement during a press conference on illegal betting in sport and the need to legalize gambling. He said if the state can not stop gambling, then at least be able to gain revenue by melegalisasinya.
"If you can not enforce the ban on betting, it's like saying, 'If you can not prevent rape, then you can enjoy it," he said. The statement has caused anger across India, which in 2012 and was rocked by widespread protests following the brutal rape of a female student on a bus in New Delhi.
In his defense, Sinha said that his comments had been taken out of context and misinterpreted. He also expressed regret at his words.
Already angry activists continue to demand his resignation. Communist Party of India leader Brinda Karat said Sinha's comments offend all women, not just in India. "It's sickening that a man is responsible for a rape investigation must use analogies like that," said Karat. "He's not only demeaning but also insulting to women."
India's central reform law for rapists and creates a fast-track courts for rape cases. This new legislation was introduced after the sexual assault in the country sparked outrage around the world. They also established the death penalty for offenders who commit repeated actions or rape attack that caused the death of the victim.
